Frequently Asked Questions

What is RPL / Skills Recognition?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process of recognising that you may be competent in an area of study or subject (referred to as unit of competency), regardless of how, when or where the learning has occurred. You can apply for one or more units through the RPL process, including the entire qualification.

You may have developed your competence through the following avenues:

– Previous experience (workplace, volunteer work, general life experience)

– Skills and knowledge learning through an apprenticeship

– On the job learning

– Previous study (non-accredited, short courses, overseas courses)

– Working in the field

– A combination of the above

In order to receive RPL for one or more units in this qualification, you must be assessed by a qualified assessor who will use their professional judgment to determine your competency level against the unit criteria based on your existing skills, knowledge and evidence.

What are the benefits of RPL?

The RPL process can reduce the amount of time spent on completing formal training and assessments if you already possess the required skills and knowledge.

The RPL process can allow you to have your skills and knowledge formalised by a nationally recognised certificate or statement of attainment. This is valuable in the workplace, as evidence of having attained a certain level of skill and knowledge, formally is professionally valuable.

The RPL process can identify any gaps in your skills and knowledge, and highlight any learning that needs to occur to meet the requirements of the job role or qualification.

The RPL process is a time efficient process for time poor RPL candidates.

What’s the process for RPL?

Recognition of prior learning is a flexible process which will involve discussions between you and the assessor to try and determine the best approach.

We will work with you to assist you in determining what evidence is appropriate to ensure you can demonstrate competency against the unit criteria.

The assessor will request documents you have in your possession and in some cases where you are unable to provide some of the documents/evidence, the assessor will chat to you about alternative options. Evidence will vary for each candidate, which means that specific evidence requirements will be discussed with you during onboarding should you proceed with the RPL program.

Candidates will have defined time frames to adhere to when seeking recognition of prior learning (RPL). This process requires the candidate to send supporting documents to Academy within a 10-day period in the first instance. This allows 20 days for the first round of RPL evidence to be assessed by your assessor. Once assessed your assessor will inform you of how many units have been successfully awarded through the RPL process. You will then have the opportunity to provide additional evidence to the assessor in the second month. Your assessor will discuss this with you directly. Again, you will be given another 10 days to submit this evidence to your assessor which allows another 20 days for the Aasessor to review and deliver their findings.

If gaps are identified during the RPL process, your assessor will discuss this with you and determine an appropriate process to complete your program. Further information about our RPL assessment policy is available in the Student Handbook located on our website.

If you have any questions relating to evidence documents, you may opt to speak with an assessor prior to enrolment. [Enquire now]
